Edifice is creating a connected building monitoring system providing tenants with a smart mirror capable of showing the occupancy of the public facilities such as the gym, pool, or business center. Designed to fit inside a luxury apartment building, the mirror blends seamlessly into a modern bathroom.
My job as a contract Mechanical Engineer was to create prototypes of the mirror door and backing bar inside the cabinet. This door houses the monitor, mirror glass, and electronics. Some interesting design challenges on this project included the requirement of easy access to the electronics without compromising aesthetics, restrictions on the maximum weight of the door, and creating installation images for contractors.
I designed a series of lightweight aluminum sheet metal components that minimized unique parts and could be riveted together to create a strong frame when bonded to the mirror glass. Hinges can be attached to either edge of the frame, enabling left or right handed opening of the mirror door.
